Yogi Adityanath was born Ajay Mohan Bisht. He was a mathematics graduate.

In 1990 he joined Ayodhya Ram temple movement. He met head priest of Gorakhnath Math Mahant Avaidyanath and was influenced by him. Later he left home and became the disciple of Avaidyanath. Subsequently, he received the name ‘Yogi Adityanath’.
He joined the BJP in 1991.
He became Mahant or head priest of the Gorakhnath Math, in September 2014 when Avaidyanath died. and also succeeded Mahant Avaidyanath.
He has been elected to the Parliament from Gorakhpur in 1998. He was the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha at 26. He won the next 4 consicutive elections held in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.
He became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 19 March 2017.
